When Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury died from complications due to AIDS on November 24, 1991, the world was left mournful and shocked, since Mercury went public with his illness only 24 hours before his death. A tribute concert was quickly scheduled for April 20, 1992 at England's massive Wembley Stadium, and some of rock's biggest names signed on to perform (in addition to Queen's three surviving members) -- Metallica, Seal, David Bowie, Elton John, Guns N' Roses, Annie Lennox, and others. The first half of the concert featured most of the groups performing short sets of their favorite Queen songs mixed in with their originals -- Extreme performed a thorough "Queen Medley," Def Leppard covered "Now I'm Here," while Metallica and Guns N' Roses stuck to just their originals. Then the "collaborations" between Queen and the guests began. Some artists did it great (Seal's "Who Wants to Live Forever," George Michael's "Somebody to Love," an "Under Pressure" duet between David Bowie and Annie Lennox), some were okay (Metallica's James Hetfield on "Stone Cold Crazy"), while others were downright dreadful (Elton John and Axl Rose's duet for "Bohemian Rhapsody"). And as the ultimate tribute to Freddie Mercury, one of his favorite all-time singers, Liza Minnelli, sings a show-closing version of "We Are the Champions." While the performances on The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert aren't always consistent, they are very entertaining.
